What's the difference between web hosting and a dedicated server?

With many web hosting packages, your web content is served up (to the 'net) on a server that is actually shared with other people who also have web content. There are normally restrictions on what type of programs can be run to support your site (from a list of their supported programs). For example, they may include support for mySQL but not Oracle. You may sometimes find that response time for your site is slowed down because other sites share the same physical server.





If you have a dedicated server, it's, well, dedicated. You can at many places supply your own server, but at others you have to pick from what they offer. But you typically have more freedom about what programs you can run to support your web services. It's also more expensive.

What's the difference between web hosting and a dedicated server?
A dedicated server is actually one option for hosting.





You can host in a SHARED environment, which puts your site on a server with many other sites.





Or you can host in a DEDICATED environment, where you're on your own server.





In either case, you're likely paying for space at a hosting facility.





Shared is cheaper, but can hurt performance.





Dedicated is more expensive, but gives you more control over what software you use, and may help if you have a very busy site.

If you start websites, you can use shared hosting and if your site grows lot, then consider dedicated hosting.
