I have never had one before and am planning my first one. I live on a fairly major street. Is Saturday OK (the Sunday I am available is Super Bowl)? Do I need to place ads? Where? Signs? How do you decide about pricing? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Any suggestions for hosting a garage sale?
Great! Saturday is the best day. Start no later than 9am cuz there is some hardcore salers out there that want to be super early.
Put some cardboard boxes with arrows pointing the way to your house on close intersections the night before or early AM.
Some flyers on telephone poles with the address and hours.
Some flyers at the Grocery store too.
Try to price everything with little tags or group by table, people hate to ask all of the time how much you want for something.
Along that note, be willing to negotiate.
If ya really want to be popular, put out some free cookies and coffee.
Oh, and by all means... Take down your signs afterwards! (It's terrible to be out looking for sales and come across and follow old ones to a dead end)
Have fun getting rich that day! Watching the money roll in!
Reply:Saturday is definetly okay. Most of the times, Saturdays are the busiest days, most people are off work. You can place ads in the paper, but you need to do that like a week or 2 in advance due to deadlines for newspapers. I put out signs at the end of the road and at any entrance to your road in bright neon colors. Set your prices high enough to make some money, but remember the reason you are having a garage sale is that you are needing to get rid of stuff. Have fun with it!
Reply:List it in Craigslist and you probably won't need an ad in the paper. Also check with the city to make sure that you don't need some kind of permit. We have to get one in my town.
Reply:If you advertise that you are starting at 8am, be prepared for the "early birds" coming as you are placing the stuff outside. They want the best pickings. People want a bargain when they shop at a garage sale so you cant ask for a store price, really. If they say your price is too high and they want to haggle, you have to decide if you really want to sell it or are you willing to let it go for nearly nothing?
Reply:Most cities have garage sale bylaws - find out if you need a license, and if you do, get one.
Be objective about your stuff. If it's crap, throw it out. If it's broken, throw it out. One man's junk is often another man's treasure, but garbage is just garbage.
Wash everything that can be washed. Nobody wants to buy toys with stuff stuck to it, or clothing with stains...
Be realistic about pricing. Imagine how you would view the item if you saw it at someone else's garage sale. What would you be willing to pay for it? Then expect to get half of that, because most garage salers are looking for bargains. Be prepared to negotiate, or knock $17.50 worth of merchandise down to $15. If you get hung up on getting a lot of money for things, you're going to find yourself with a full garage at the end of the day.
Signage is important. People driving by don't have time to read addresses, but are more than able to follow arrows. I do a garage sale every year and use flourescent cardboard signs. You can see them from blocks away. The arrows point them in the right direction - no address required.
Serious garage salers will be out early.. AS in: Thursday evening... You're better off doing it on a Friday than a Saturday. I often start mine of Friday at noon, Saturday til 4:00 and then hold a 50% off on Sunday morning. Items that were $1 on Friday are 50cents or less by Sunday. The point is to get rid of everything, any amount of money is better than hauling it back into the house again.
Good luck.. And have fun!!!
Reply:Depending on where you live, if you live on a major street, advertising in the paper may not be necessary. Just put up some signs. Pricing is a little hard to tell you. If you don't want the stuff around anymore, price it low enough to get rid of it. If you are trying to "make money", and don't mind keeping it around if it doesn't sell, then you can price it a little higher. Just don't price it too high.
There are different views about yard sales, if you just want to get rid of the junk around the house, don't expect much, and take whatever people offer. Otherwise, don't expect everything to sell.
Reply:friday and saterday are the day you went to sale thing .but signout buy the raod ,and were you thank people going to see them . for cost if pricing ,remander the thing are use to people. so kept the price you went to sale it for good luck on your sale
