Do you have suggestions for hosting a free to low budget party/ mixer?

I am planning an evening mixer for my college alumni members. I am initiating this on my own so I suspect the costs would be entirely mine. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I could pull off getting a place to host it without having to pay for the reservation or party food and activities?

Do you have suggestions for hosting a free to low budget party/ mixer?
-Look around the area for bars/clubs that boast a happy hour with free appetizers.

-Or set it up at a Chinese restaurant/party room. Make arrangements with the staff to serve up appetizers only: Pot stickers, egg rolls, Chinese chicken salad, fried rice, fried chicken wings. Chinese restaurants are usually great at working with strict budgets.
Reply:Call around and ask them.Once you get it call the ones you plan on inviting and tell them its a BYOB party. Then ask each one to bring a different snack item.Have dips%26amp; chips, nuts, veggy platter, maybe fruit platter.Don't forget to tell some one to be sure to bring a large ice chest with ice.If they are your alumni why not ask for $20 donation for the cause and see what they say.good luck.
Reply:appetizer contest. this will provide many enteries, then your cost will be like maybe drinks. you can also do something like show your school colors potluck? you can also hit up local business that might want to use your venue for advertising purposes also. offer something like a GC for target or blockbuster?
Reply:If you or someone you know lives in an apartment or community style condo or house, then look into possibly renting out a recreation room on the grounds... they're usually pretty nice and low cost. In regards to food, make it a pot luck; ask all your guests to bring their favorite appetizer and the recipe along with it (this will also help promote socializing). It will also cut down on food costs a lot, and all you'll have to worry about is a main dish. (for a suggestion, spaghetti goes a long way and is affordable; that's a thought) For drinks, try to hit up a Costco or something so that you can purchase in bulk; that's also less expensive. Keep decorations simple... candles and soft lighting always looks nice.

Good luck and have fun!!
